TWO FACED, the legendary 1300cc double-engined Triumph, was originally so called because it was a bit temperamental due to running 95% Nitro-mixes, which caused many engine blow-ups. It was fitted with two 650cc pre-unit Triumph engines with alloy heads, inlet ports opened to 1-1/4 inches fitted with Wal Philips fuel-injectors, one-piece crankshaft, Somerton cams (later changed to Harman & Collins), alloy valve-collars and lightened rockers. It ran a best standing-start 1/4 mile time of 10.21 seconds ('straight off the trailer' as the Yanks say) at RAF Topcliffe on 16th June 1968. The best 1/4 mile terminal speed was 141 mph, by no means its flat out speed.

TWO FACED in action at Topcliffe again circa 1969/70. The original 1968 frame was aluminium alloy but due to cracking was replaced in 1969 with a frame made from Reynolds 531 steel tubing and chrome-plated. TWO FACED's 10.21 elapsed time, set at Topcliffe in 1968, was a course-record that stood for 4 years before it was broken. TWO FACED does NOT have a turbo or supercharger.

TWO FACED on the start line at North-Weald in 1996, coincidentally also on the 16th June, and then below burning rubber a couple of seconds later. The bike uses TOP gear only for the entire 1/4 mile run, smoking almost the whole distance. Pete also has plans for two 800cc engines using 750cc Morgo barrels and Norton cranks. |
